In the square, they prepare a hangman’s noose, and in the courtyard, they raise the gallows.
She waits, journal in hand, in the dark bowels of the dungeons.
It is cold, and she is ill and drawn from malnutrition and mistreatment. The tatters of her silky gown, kirtled around her waist, provide no comfort.
The grim is ever-present on her skin, and her stringy hair is hopelessly snarled in a rat’s nest behind her head, where she had once worn an elegant bun.

The night was a downhill spiral once Kenshin was gone. Kaoru dreamed a nightmare of darkness and twining feelers which held her fast in the throes of terror. She twisted her sheets into knots, violently thrashing onto the floor onto the crumpled mess of her blanket.
